From the desk of Dusty79:

“This was made as a sort of last defense for GI Joe. It is a Skystriker modified with two booster rockets on a booster platform to get to high altitude and get it anywhere on the planet for a tactical nuclear strike against Cobra. It is a last resort weapon system.”

From the desk of Oreobuilder:

Bucky, Dusty79, and I are teaming for a new joint project. This time, we also enlisted the help of another customizer: Dusty79. Between the three of us, we set out to imagine what a fresh new GI Joe line would look like for 2015. New characters, new takes on old favorites and cool vehicles, our project has them.

If we can get our ducks in a row, we are aiming to roll this project out everyday of the month starting July 1st. So stay tuned. In the meantime, to give you a taste, here is a fun teaser video that Bucky put together.”

RIP, Don Levine

The G.I. Joe family has lost one of its forefathers. Our condolences and prayers go out to the family of Don Levine. From Yahoo News:

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Donald Levine, the Hasbro executive credited as the father of G.I. Joe for developing the world’s first action figure, has died. He was 86.

He died of cancer early Thursday at Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island, said his wife, Nan. They were just about to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.

Levine shepherded the toy through design and development as Hasbro’s head of research and development. He and his team came up with an 11½-inch articulated figure with 21 moving parts, and since the company’s employees included many military veterans, it was decided to outfit the toy in the uniforms of the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force, with such accessories as guns, helmets and vehicles.

Levine, who served in the Army in Korea, said he got the idea for the moveable figure as a way to honor veterans.

G.I. Joe hit the shelves in time for the 1964 Christmas shopping season and soon became a big seller at $4 apiece.

“Don Levine and his team took it from a good concept to a great concept,” said Alan Hassenfeld, Hasbro’s former CEO whose father, Merrill, oversaw G.I. Joe’s development when he ran the company.

G.I. Joe remained popular until the late 1960s, as opposition to Vietnam intensified and parents shied away from military-related toys. Hasbro countered in 1970 by introducing “Adventure Team” G.I. Joes that played down the military connection. Into the ’70s, G.I. Joes featured “lifelike hair” and “kung-fu grip” and were outfitted with scuba gear to save the oceans and explorer’s clothing for discovering mummies.

Hasbro said in a statement that Levine’s “influence on the toy industry was profound” as his team developed the concept of an action figure.

“His work forever changed the way kids play with toys, and in particular helped birth the G.I. Joe brand which has been a part of the American fabric for 50 years,” the company said.

Over the decades, G.I. Joe has spawned comic books, cartoons, two movies starring Channing Tatum, and a G.I. Joe Collector’s Club and its annual convention — GIJoeCon — held in Dallas in April.

Levine’s funeral will be held Sunday morning at Temple Beth-El in Providence. He is survived by his wife, three children and four grandchildren.

As some of you know, information and images about The Corps! line of action figures and vehicles (by Lanard) has become scarce as the years have gone by. Many sites dedicated to this line have simply disappeared, including the official site that previously offered older images and history.

Recently, Robowang has taken it upon himself to collect and catalog all available information from this line and list it together in a single, easily accessible archive. If you are a collector, or just nostalgic, take a look through his vintage archives and share in the conversation.

If you have pictures or information to contribute, there are areas within to become a part of the project. Click through to read!

Dungeons & Dragons: Tyranny of Dragons is Coming!

entertainment news

I cannot speak for anyone else, but AD&D shaped a formative part of my years, especially my focus on writing and creativity. Some odd number of years ago, I fell away from gaming in general, but whether it has been through the random computer game, DDO, a quick jaunt through a fantasy novel, or discussions with friends, I’ve always maintained a love for the genre. Speaking with buddies at the convention this year, I know a lot of you feel the same way. Wizards of the Coast has just dropped words of new offerings for 2014.

From their site:

May 19, 2014 – Renton, WA – Today, Wizards of the Coast kicked off a pivotal year for Dungeons & Dragons, unveiling new serialized entertainment offerings that will bring the upcoming Tyranny of Dragons storyline to life as well as announcing the D&D Player’s Handbook,Monster Manual and Dungeon Master’s Guide for the highly-anticipated new rules set for the D&D tabletop roleplaying game. Together, these new offerings will command the attention of digital and tabletop RPG players alike, setting the foundation for the future of the brand and powering incredible, action-packed play experiences for fans.

First out of the gates for Tyranny of Dragons digital offerings will be a new module for the highly-acclaimed Dungeons & Dragons MMO,Neverwinter, from Cryptic Studios and Perfect World Entertainment. The new module, aptly titled Tyranny of Dragons, will be the premier digital Dungeons & Dragons experience for players and will launch on August 14, 2014.

“We’ve had an incredible time being a key part of the Dungeons & Dragons experience,” said Jack Emmert, CEO and Co-Founder of Cryptic Studios. “Building Neverwinter has been an outstanding journey for our companies. With the new Tyranny of Dragons module, bothNeverwinter and the larger Dungeons & Dragons franchise will continue to be the most compelling fantasy adventure for players new and old.”

For players eager to sink their teeth into the Tyranny of Dragons storyline around the gaming table, two new tabletop adventures will also release this year. Hoard of the Dragon Queen (August 19) and The Rise of Tiamat (October 21) will take players into the depths of the dragon’s lair, pitting them against Tiamat, the most fearsome dragon in D&D’s history.”

This is a very biased opinion, but I feel these customs are the embodiment of great customs that I’ve seen today!

ECO-Force BBQ by JPNX

Now I know that this was from yesterday, but I think it’s awesome the way he brought out the design and color of the original figure and gave it a really cool modern look…

Next is Desert Grunt by Porcupunker

I love the combination of parts, especially the pouches on the vest. The head is a great choice and the paint wash gives it a realistic look.

Third is Vega Customs V4 Sgt. Slaughter. I like the blend of color washes and the Sarge looks Jacked and ready to tear some heads off those snakes!

Female Action Figure Kickstarter “I Am Elemental”

Fierce female action figures that embody the Elements of Courage: Bravery, Energy, Honesty, Industry, Enthusiasm, Persistence & Fear.

IAmElemental Action Figures for Girls were designed to accomplish three goals.
First, they are intended to be a positive and fierce re-interpretation of the traditional female action figure.

Second, IAmElemental action figures encourage girls to reinvent the superhero myth by creating their own empowering stories. In the traditional, male-dominated superhero universe, action figures are endowed with powers from without (via a spider bite, mutant DNA, or some sort of “accident”). In the IAmElemental universe, the girl herself is the superhero – and she has all the superpowers she will ever need already inside of her.

Third, we set out to create a toy that is super fun to play with and collect. We knew from the outset that if the figures weren’t well-designed, nothing else would matter.
